10 Important facts you need to know about laser hair removal in Brooklyn, NY

10 Important Facts About Laser Hair Removal in Brooklyn NY area

Razors, depilatory creams, oh my! With all the pain and negative side effects of traditional hair removal methods, it’s no wonder that laser hair removal has become one of the most popular cosmetic treatments in the United States. At KHROM MEDSPA & WELLNESS in Brooklyn, NY, we offer laser hair removal on all parts of the body, as well as several packages with pricing for multiple areas such as the full legs and bikini area. For patients considering this method of permanently reducing unwanted hair, we have provided 10 important facts about the procedure below.

1. Laser hair removal works by targeting the pigment in the hair follicle

In the laser hair removal process, laser light pulses are delivered over the treatment area to target the pigment in the hair follicles and bulbs. This heats up the hair follicle and prevents it from being able to grow more hair. Aside from being able to ditch the daily shaving or hair removal creams, you will also notice the added benefit of clearer skin and a reduction of ingrown hairs.

2. It works best on dark hair

Patients with dark hair achieve the best results from laser hair removal, but it can be done on any skin type with our advanced lasers that can be adjusted to each person’s unique skin tone. Red, blonde, and gray hair are not effectively removed with laser hair removal because they do not contain enough pigment for the laser to target.

3. The total treatment time varies by area

The amount of time each session takes depends on the area being treated. Smaller areas such as the face or underarms can be done in less than 20 minutes, whereas larger areas will take longer.

4. Multiple sessions are necessary

Most patients require up to eight treatments to see the best results, and it takes some time to initially begin seeing hair loss in the treatment area – usually, patients begin seeing results within two to three weeks of their first session. Multiple treatments are required because laser hair removal only targets hair follicles in the active growth phase, so only about one-third of your hair is treated in any given session

5. Some things need to be avoided prior to treatment

The procedure cannot be done on skin that has recently been tanned, so we advise patients to avoid sun exposure or using artificial tanning beds for two weeks before their treatment.

6. The procedure may cause mild discomfort, but most patients find it easily tolerable

Because laser hair removal works by creating heat in the hair follicle and bulb, it can cause a sensation of sharp, quick pain in the treatment areas while the laser is being used. Typically, you will feel more discomfort in thinner areas of skin, such as on certain areas of the face, or skin in sensitive areas such as the bikini line. Most patients do not find it intolerable, though, and many lasers are equipped with cooling mechanisms that help increase comfort during the procedure. An additional option is numbing cream.

7. After treatment, you need to avoid exercise and sun exposure for a short period

The heat from the laser remains for 24 hours in your skin, so we encourage patients to avoid going to the gym, using a sauna, or taking a hot bath during that time because this can create a breeding ground for bacteria to multiply, which could potentially cause an infection or create red spots on your skin. We also caution patients to avoid sun exposure in the treated areas for two weeks after treatment.

8. Shaving is the only hair removal method that should be done between treatments

Between treatment sessions, it is important not to wax, pluck, or bleach the remaining hair in the treatment area because it will affect your long-term results. Instead, you will need to shave those areas between treatments if you want to be hair-free during that time

9. Maintenance sessions are usually needed over time

Minor regrowth of hair can occur over time due to natural changes in the body, hormone imbalances, or other conditions. Most patients need to have touch-up sessions done annually to maintain their smooth, hair-free skin. We offer packages with maintenance sessions at KHROM MEDSPA & WELLNESS

10. Laser hair removal is safe

Laser hair removal is a non-invasive, FDA-approved treatment that is safe when performed by trained professionals, such as the team at KHROM MEDSPA & WELLNESS.

Laser hair removal is a great way to kiss those razors goodbye. If you are interested in learning more about the process and whether you are a good candidate, call our office at 718-521-2912 today.
