Brooklyn dermatologist explains how CoolSculpting works and what you can expect
CoolSculpting is a non-invasive, revolutionary body sculpting procedure that can slim down even the most stubborn areas of fat on your body. If you have been working out at the gym and eating well, but just can’t seem to eliminate some of those pesky bulges, then CoolSculpting may be a great choice for you! Below, Dr. Tatiana Khrom from the Art of Natural Beauty in Brooklyn, NY explains how CoolSculpting treatment works and what you can expect during and after your procedure.
How CoolSculpting works
CoolSculpting is a popular alternative to invasive body sculpting methods such as liposuction. Using a specialized device, a skilled practitioner applies targeted, controlled cooling to the treatment area. The true work of CoolSculpting occurs at the cellular level. After the fat cells have been exposed to cool temperatures, they freeze and die. At that point, your body naturally flushes them out and eliminates them, leaving you looking slimmer and revealing more of your existing muscle tone. It is safe and effective and has been performed over one million times across the world.
What to expect during your CoolSculpting session
We will begin the procedure by first placing a clear gel pad on the treatment area, which is used to create a barrier between the device and your skin. Then, the applicator will be applied, which may generate the sensation of sucking, pulling, or mild pinching.
- You will likely feel an intense cold sensation where the device is being used at first, but it will quickly dissipate
- Within five to ten minutes, the area will become numb
- After the application is complete, our skilled practitioner massages the treatment area for a few minutes
- When it is over, you can return to your typical daily activities immediately afterwards, with no downtime needed

Number of treatments needed
In many cases, only one CoolSculpting session is necessary to achieve the results you are looking for! It naturally diminishes the fat cells in the treatment area by 20 to 25 percent, which can make a dramatic difference in the appearance of stubborn bulges or pockets of fat. The closer you are to your ideal weight when you have CoolSculpting treatment performed, the more likely you are to only need one session. If you have larger pockets of fat, are treating a larger area on your body, or have a larger overall body fat percentage, then two or more treatments may be needed to get optimal results.
Two of the most common questions we receive about CoolSculpting are, “How fast will I see results?” and “Are the results permanent?” The great news is that you will begin to see results in a matter of weeks, and yes, the results are permanent! Most patients notice changes in their body shape in about three weeks, and the results will just keep getting better as your body continues to eliminate more fat cells for up to four to six months after your treatment. If you already lead a healthy, active lifestyle, you will look slimmer and your body shape in the treatment area will have less visible fat. Your skin will not be damaged by the treatment.
Because the fat cells are frozen and die after CoolSculpting treatment, once they have been eliminated, they will not come back. Some patients worry that even though the fat will disappear in one area, it will pop up in another. This will not occur with CoolSculpting because it does not re-distribute the fat cells in any areas that are untreated. It is important to note that if you gain weight after your treatment, the remaining fat cells in the area can expand.
