Intense pulsed light (IPL) photofacial and body treatment in Brooklyn, New York
Aging, injuries, sun exposure, hormone changes, and other events in life can take their toll on our skin. At Art of Natural Beauty Center in Brooklyn, New York, we are equipped with the latest skin care technologies to help revitalize and renew your skin, including intense pulsed light (IPL) treatments for your face and body.
Harnessing the therapeutic power of light
Intense pulsed light therapy is a customizable, non-invasive treatment that uses the energy from a powerful broad spectrum of light to treat a variety of skin conditions, such as:
- Sun damage
- Red spots
- Unwanted freckles
- Visible capillaries or broken blood vessels
- Port wine stains
- Liver spots (age spots)
IPL is like laser treatments in that it uses light energy, but instead of using a single wavelength of light like a laser, it uses a broad spectrum for a gentler, more versatile approach to skin revitalization. Because it uses a variety of wavelengths, the treatment can target multiple types of discoloration at the same time. Using custom settings on the IPL device enables our clinicians to adjust the treatment intensity for a variety of skin types and desired results. After IPL treatment, patients experience more evenly toned, younger looking skin, without the downtime that can be associated with other treatments.

Revitalizing your face and body
While IPL treatments are often called “photofacials,” the treatment is not limited to use on the face – in fact, it can be used nearly anywhere on the body that you have pigmentation issues or would benefit from skin rejuvenation therapy. This may include areas such as the neck, décolleté, chest, back of the hands, lower arms, or other areas of your skin that have discoloration or skin tone issues.
In a personalized consultation and evaluation, we will discuss your goals for your skin and your medical history to determine whether IPL treatment is the best choice or if another skin revitalization therapy would be a better option. Before your IPL therapy, we advise you to avoid waxing, excess sun exposure or tanning beds, or chemical peels. We will also discuss any medications and topical treatments that you should avoid for a few days prior to treatment. IPL therapy is not advised for people with extremely light-sensitive skin, infections or sores in the treatment area, or who may have skin cancer.
What to expect
When you arrive for your appointment, we will rub a gel onto the area that is being treated and give you dark protective glasses to shield your eyes from the light. Then, we will customize the settings on the device for your individual skin and then place the device onto the treatment area. The time it takes to complete the treatment depends on the size of the treatment area – some areas only take about 20 to 30 minutes, but larger areas can take up to an hour. Most people do not experience discomfort from the pulses of light, but others feel a slight stinging sensation like a snapping rubber band. If you have very sensitive skin, we can apply a numbing agent prior to your IPL therapy for your comfort.
After your treatment is complete, your skin in the treatment area may be red for a few hours, like a sunburn, but using a cool washcloth or icepacks on your skin can help relieve any discomfort. Depending on the results you are seeking, we may recommend multiple treatments that are scheduled about a month apart.
